Pre-loved items finding new lease of life.
Taking pre-loved essential baby items and redistributing them to families who are struggling financially, Littlemore not only helps parents to give their babies the best start in life, but also encourages families to think about sustainability and recycling.
Thanks to a team of around 50 volunteers, Littlemore receives, checks, sorts and shares donated high-quality items ranging from bedding and clothing to car seats and strollers to educational toys and books.
Donations are made from across Auckland and beyond, and the most high-need families are identified by working with partner organisations, midwives, social workers, social service agencies, and maternity and neo-natal units.
A successful Grassroots Giving grant application in 2017 meant Littemore were able to employ their first paid employee – a part-time services delivery manager to support the large volunteer workforce, manage day-to-day operations, and develop a strategic plan for the organisation.
A year on, and they've again received funding from the Grassroots Giving Programme thanks to the effectiveness, reach and impact of their service.
Operations Manager Sarb Lester says that she knows herself the difference donated items can make to everyday life when you have a new child to look after.
"A new baby is a time of joy and celebration – but it can also be a time of stress and anxiety for new parents. As a mother myself, I've personally experienced the many challenges that new families face, particularly during the first critical year."
"We all want to be the best parents we can be. We also know that babies need lots of things. Times are tough for families who are really struggling, but we can help families to give their babies the best start in life by ensuring they can sleep, travel and play safely."
"And by reusing high quality items, the Auckland community can continue to reduce waste by minimising the number of items that may otherwise end up in landfill. We provide opportunities for families to teach their children and wider family about sustainability, and provide a positive and practical way to recycle goods as a family."
It's not just families that benefit from Littlemore's support. As well as the opportunity to participate in community life, the diverse volunteer team are also developing personal and professional skills – with some expressing an interest in applying for leadership roles.
One volunteer says,
"I volunteer with Littlemore to play my part in making the world a better place, especially for mothers and their children. I can only imagine how happy the mothers that receive our clothing and baby items will feel."
