Fund for the Pacific
The purpose of the Fund for the Pacific is to provide a charitable Fund for donors in Aotearoa that supports the Pacific Islands during times of crisis.
The Fund for the Pacific, exists to support the Pacific Islands during times of crisis. Its inception stemmed from a shared commitment among Auckland Council and private donors aross Tāmaki Makaurau to extend assistance when the Pacific region faces adversity. Since 2017, coordinated efforts have ensured its efficacy in promptly channeling support to frontline organizations in the Pacific Islands during emergencies.
With a clear focus on the key pillars of disaster mitigation, preparation, and planning, as well as emergency response and crisis recovery, the Fund for the Pacific has a commitment to bolstering resilience and fostering sustainable recovery across the Pacific region. Through these key pillars, the Fund strengthens communities and encourages kinship and support across Aotearoa and the Pacific Islands.
Examples of support provided by the Fund include Oxfam Tonga relief support after Cyclone Gita in 2018 and support to the Aotearoa Tonga Relief Fund and the Hunga Recovery Fund after the Hunga Ha'apia eruption and tsunami in 2022.
Quote from Sir Michael Jones, Auckland Foundation Ambassador:
"Auckland Foundation is a really good fit for me, because being Auckland born and bred, I love this city, and the work of Auckland Foundation helps to leave things in a better place than when we found them, which aligns directly with who I am, and my motivations. The Fund for the Pacific in particular is something that resonates closely with me. It's an important fund, helping ensure our Pacific families and communities can access support quickly when it’s needed most. So many Aucklanders have deep ties across the Pacific, and this fund allows us to respond with care, urgency and aroha when people throughout the pacific face hardship."
