Empowering the next generation: New grant for secondary students in Ōtāhuhu

Ngee Hwai (Isaac) Phua and Anne Feeney have recently established a new grant for the students of McAuley High School. The grant will enable young people heading to university to reach their full potential and creates a lasting legacy in honour of Anne’s late aunt Sister Moira Feeney.


Situated in Ōtāhuhu, McAuley High School is a Catholic secondary school for girls with a current roll of 800 students. The school has developed a strong reputation as a safe and supportive environment where students are given the tools to achieve their best. This is evident through their high academic achievements, strong attendance rates and an alumni of leaders in the business, sports and arts fields.

McAuley High School was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1963. Their founding principal was Sister Moira Feeney, who worked at the school until 1976. This holds a strong personal connection to Anne as Sister Moira is her late aunt.

 

To honour her legacy, Anne and Ngee Hwai (Isaac) are excited to open a scholarship for students to continue to flourish in their academic journeys. Their latest grant is an annual scholarship of $20,000 that will benefit five students who have been accepted into university and will cover their costs of attending higher education.

This scholarship is a powerful way to remember Anne’s family member and continues the goals of Ngee Hwai (Isaac) and Anne when they established the Phua-Feeney Family Charitable Fund with Auckland Foundation in 2020. Their goal is to create a legacy of giving that will not just benefit the community of today but will last for generations to come. For over five years, they have contributed to projects across environment, education, health, and poverty alleviation.

Ngee Hwai (Isaac) and Anne toured the school with principal Jan Waelan recently and were impressed by the committed staff and passionate students that they met. Ngee Hwai (Isaac) added that they hope this scholarship will allow students to go on to live fulfilling lives.

Access to education can change lives. We are thrilled to see this new grant established for the students of McAuley High School and look forward to seeing the impact it will have on our next generation of leaders and the wider community.
