Save the Kiwi
Save the Kiwi is the national charity dedicated to bringing kiwi from endangered to everywhere.
We work alongside iwi, conservation groups, communities, organisations, and the Department of Conservation to reverse the decline of the national kiwi population and create more kiwi-safe habitat all over Aotearoa. We support conservation groups in their mahi to protect the kiwi from introduced predators, hatch and raise kiwi until they are old enough to defend themselves, and work closely with iwi and landowners to return kiwi to where they once were. Kiwi conservation brings communities together through a shared aspiration to help bring kiwi to their backyards. And nowhere is this truer than the opportunities that exist across the greater Auckland region.
In recent years we have introduced kiwi to Waiheke Island and supported the community-based efforts to expand the populations and range of the kiwi at Mataia (Kaipara Kiwi project) and Tāwharanui Peninsula through the Forest Bridge Trust. And initiatives are underway to bring kiwi back to other areas across the region. The Tāmaki Makaurau Kiwi Fund will help us drive this work forward. Donations to the fund will be directed specifically to the work of Save the Kiwi in this region. That work may range from Kiwi Avoidance Training for dogs and dog owners, to assistance with community consultation and advocacy, site readiness evaluations, permit processing and more.
